The Haunting
The Old Courthouse was built in 1836 when the county seat was removed from Johnstown to Fonda. Numerous events have occurred here—including trials for murder (and subsequent executions) and a libel case involving noted author James Fenimore Cooper. Paranormal activity ranges from books falling from library shelves and mysterious voices and footsteps heard when no one else is in the building, to sightings of a woman in a blue victorian period dress who vanishes into thin air. Paranormal groups have investigated and recent evidence points to the woman's name being "Linda," though who she was in life remains a mystery...

Opportunities for visitors:
Visit this historical building during normal operating hours for a self-guided tour (the first floor is a public space and accessible to visitors) and stop into the Department of History & Archives to ask the staff about their personal experiences and firsthand haunted accounts. Or, call ahead to book a paranormal investigation with your group outside of normal business hours. A handout will be provided to guests sharing the reported occurrences of paranormal activity.

Montgomery County Department of History & Archives is open to the public Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in July and August. except on federal holidays. Please call ahead to book a group investigation or special event.
