Frederic Remington Art Museum
The Haunting
Set along the St. Lawrence River, the Frederic Remington Art Museum occupies the historic 1809 Parish Mansion, a former private residence that became a museum in 1923. While renowned today for its exceptional collection of Frederic Remington’s artwork, the mansion also holds a layered past shaped by generations of occupants, including Remington’s widow, Eva, who lived there for a time after his death.
Unexplained activity has been reported at the museum for nearly a century. Sightings of mysterious lights began in the 1920s, followed by repeated appearances in the 1950s of Ameriga Vespucci, a mid-19th-century resident now considered the building’s primary spirit. Visitors and staff have since reported footsteps, voices, doors moving on their own, and the feeling of unseen company. Other spirits are said to include Eva Remington, a young child, and a War of 1812 soldier.
