The Armour-Stiner Octagon House
The Armour-Stiner Octagon House
The Haunting
Visually unique, The Armour-Stiner Octagon House, built in 1860 and renovated in 1872, is the only known residence constructed in the eight-sided, domed colonnaded shape of a classic Roman temple. Over the years, the house passed through the hands of a colorful array of owners, and perhaps, some of them never truly left.
Celebrated home occupant, Carl Carmer, an author, poet, and historian, featured the house in a number of his tales, including stories of a resident ghost. This "Fragrant Ghost," a spirit manifesting as a floral scent, is believed to have followed former owner Carl Carmer from his previous residence. Its aromatic presence, often described as lilac or heliotrope, continues to linger in the house and has even been experienced by guests.
Equally compelling is the tale of the "Lady in White," steeped in heartbreak and tragedy. According to legend, during the house’s early years, a French widow and her beautiful daughter lived here. The daughter fell deeply in love with a young man from a neighboring aristocratic family, but their love was forbidden. Determined to be together, the couple attempted to elope, boarding a steamboat bound for New York City. Tragically, the steamboat’s boiler exploded, killing the young man instantly and leaving the girl to drown in the treacherous waters of the Hudson River. Her mother, devastated and in denial, refused to accept the coffin sent to her home. To this day, the Lady in White is said to wander the grounds, her presence a haunting testament to the grief of star-crossed lovers.
Beyond these well-known spirits, the house’s aura seems to emanate a mix of timeless elegance and spectral unrest. The current inhabitants and visitors often describe an unmistakable "energy" lingering within its walls. Some psychics claim to feel a happy reconciliation of the past’s tragedies, a warmth that balances its tales of sorrow.
