Let the Lanterns Lead the Way: Discover History and Mystery on a Haunted Tour

Sometimes the best way to seek out the spirits is through an expert who knows them well. On the Haunted History Trail of New York State, the haunts aren’t always confined to a single building or location. Sometimes those lost souls are ingrained in the history of the town, attached to landmarks across the village and in notable stops found nearby.

That’s the case, at least, in Rome and Cooperstown, NY. Both have tour groups that specialize in telling the haunted past found in these Central New York locations.

Rome Lamplight Tours conducts a 90-minute historical walking tour of Old Rome to groups of up to 20 participants. Tours begin on Memorial Day weekend and last throughout the fall, telling stories of the life and times of Rome’s historic past, and the ghosts that may still be lingering nearby. Stops include places like Fort Stanwix – known as “the fort that never surrendered” – and the Rome Capitol Theatre, a popular stop along the Haunted History Trail.

In Cooperstown, NY, the Cooperstown Candlelight Ghost Tours combine the true, documented ghost stories of the town with its rich and vibrant history. You’ll be amazed by how much you will learn on this one-hour walking tour, which is offered nightly from April to August and on select days in the fall. Those brave enough to join the tour will visit locations like the Christ Church Graveyard – said to be haunted by the ghosts of the Cooper family slaves and servants – and River Street’s three haunted houses, called Byberry Cottage, Greencrest, and Pomeroy Place.

Two stops along the Haunted History Trail are also featured in this ghostly walk - the Baseball Hall of Fame, a place where honor and horror meet, and the mysterious Hyde Hall.

Year-round, visitors to the Haunted History Trail can book an event with Hunt with Holzer and explore more deeply into the history and haunts of the Hudson Valley Region. Alexandra Holzer, daughter of pioneer parapsychologist and researcher Dr. Hans Holzer, uses tools and tricks from the “Holzer Method” to capture paranormal evidence. She welcomes guests to accompany her team on private investigations, and offers one-hour ghost walks that include a history lesson, explanation of the Holzer Method, and research utilizing equipment – and your own senses.
