It’s a fun day on the Haunted History Trail of New York State when you are standing alone in the middle of a cemetery waiting to meet the creator of the Greater Adirondack Ghost & Tour Company (Adirondack region/Clinton County). Despite it being a beautiful autumn morning, the cemetery feels a little odd.
Right on cue, Matt Boire appears with a stovepipe hat and a lantern, strolling across the hallow grounds. Matt is a warm, pleasant person with a deep knowledge and appreciation of Plattburgh’s significant history. I quickly learn from our conversation that major moments in United States history occurred in this northern New York town and Matt is just the guy to weave it all together. The Greater Adirondack Ghost & Tour Company was created 10 years ago and host an April through November public schedule that features four distinct tours.
Of course, where there’s history…there tends to be ghosts.
After meeting Matt in the cemetery (haunted), he proceeded to take me around town, showing off the former military base (haunted), beautiful Lake Champlain waterfront (not haunted) and charming downtown Plattsburgh (yup, you guessed it…haunted!). Due to time constraints we didn’t make it out to SUNY Plattsburgh, which has its own share of ghost stories.
What made time spent in Plattsburgh so enjoyable was listening to Matt make history very relatable. He has an effective way of communicating the historical significance of Plattsburgh, while also telling stories of the town’s spirits, personalities, and some macabre events.
