Architecturally Stunning and Absolutely Spooky Stops

From a Victorian house and grand mansion to a Tudor-style hotel, the Haunted History Trail has locations so stunning, the residents wouldn’t let death stop them from living there. If the paranormal activity at these stops doesn’t mesmerize you, the architectural features certainly will.

Batcheller Mansion Inn

Known as the “Crown Jewel” of Saratoga Springs, the Batcheller Mansion Inn is an architectural masterpiece. The High Victorian Gothic mansion showcases influences from French Renaissance, Italian, and even Egyptian styles.

During the home’s prime, U.S. Presidents, European royalty, dignitaries, and Hollywood celebrities walked through its doors and marveled at its spellbinding grandeur, intricately sculpted woodwork, and hand-carved marble fireplaces. And you can do the same. Spend an evening just taking in the majesty of the haunted mansion, or reserve all nine rooms and investigate with your group. With so much history and character, it is no surprise that owner and prominent political figure, George Batcheller, continues to roam the grand halls. Staff and guests say he likes to make his presence known.

The Knox Mansion

Forty-two rooms, a grand staircase, an elevator, and a solid ash fireplace imported from a castle in Italy. These are some of the fine features of the Knox Mansion in Johnstown, NY, built in 1889 by gelatin magnate, Charles Knox.

Guests to the splendid mansion share many accounts of paranormal phenomena. Lights flickering, the sound of footsteps and voices, a piano playing by itself, and sheets being pulled off beds are just the beginning. Kids also tend to spy the deceased gardener who once loved the company of children.

Learn about the lingering souls through guided historical and haunted tours, available with a reservation, or stay overnight at the bed and breakfast to experience the hauntings for yourself.

Red Coach Inn

Over the rushing water of Niagara Falls’ spectacular Upper Rapids, you hear footsteps walking and dancing above you. But how is that possible when you’re already on the top floor?

That is the question that comes to mind for guests at the Red Coach Inn, an old English Tudor-style hotel in Niagara Falls, NY.  When it was built in 1923, the owners spared no expense or effort in recreating the style of the Bell Inn in Finedon, England. Standing at three and a half stories high, the inn’s English Tudor exterior and warm English country ambiance are sure to grab your attention - and pique your curiosity.

Don’t be afraid to ask the staff for their favorite ghost story. Tales of a young couple taking their lives on their wedding day, jewelry being dragged across a dresser by an unseen hand, and music playing in the middle of the night from a party that ended years prior. What will occur when you dine in the restaurant or choose to stay the night?

King House Mansion at the Tarrytown House Estate

Located just a short train ride or drive from New York City, Tarrytown House Estate is a charming escape among the trees in the heart of the Hudson Valley. The property has been in use for over 165 years and just recently underwent a $15 million restoration and refresh, boasting the best of old-world classic charm and unique modern flare.

Despite its stunning features, something strange is afoot at King Mansion. It’s been said that in 1955, Sybil Harris King, daughter of Benjamin Newtown Duke, co-founder of the American Tobacco Company, died on the second floor of the King House Mansion at Tarrytown House Estate. She has been heard pacing up and down the second-floor hallways and tends to linger near Room 293, the room she is said to have passed away in.

Stay overnight in the King House Mansion, and see if her spirit truly does still walk the halls of the second floor. Or make a reservation to dine on-site at the Goosefeather Restaurant and ask the staff to share the mansion's haunted history.
